Anonymous asked: how many lies have u told this year
None! For the unaware, I keep a list of lies that I tell. It makes telling a lie a lot less likely, because I really, really, really don’t like putting things on the list.
Not lying isn’t hard. It just requires thinking about what you say before you say it, and making an effort not to say things that aren’t true. Declining to answer is a powerful tool. People tend to think this means a sort of “I TELL IT LIKE IT IS!” assholeishness, but it isn’t that at all. It’s just about considering what you say.
Not lying is easy, but figuring out what to say is hard. If Open and Honest is the goal (and it is) the Open half of that is much, much more complicated. There are plenty of instances where I’m not required to say anything, but if I were, it would be tempting to lie. So I just don’t say anything.
An example: Let’s say your phone is charging and you want to leave the house. You’re expecting a call, but you won’t be gone long. So you say fuck it and head to the corner to get yourself an ice cream treat. You come home 3 missed calls from the same person. You call them back. Where were you? they ask. “I didn’t have my phone on me.” is a completely truthful answer. “I intentionally left my phone at home” is a more revealing answer, and it could easily garner a very different reaction than the first answer.
Honest is easy. Open is hard.
To circle back to the question, I have yet to tell a like in 2013. In 2012 I made it to December 30th before I lied, and the total for the year was one. I was not particularly pleased with myself after that one.
